The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released estimates on traffic fatalities from 2011.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released estimates on traffic fatalities from 2011. In a decline of 1.7% from 2010, an estimated 32,310 people died in traffic accidents last year. This is the seventh straight year of declining traffic deaths. Over these years, car accident deaths have fallen over 25%. 2011 also saw the fewest deaths per mile driven since the government began keeping records in 1921.

Experts believe there are numerous reasons causing the drop in accident fatalities. Among them, increased vehicle safety standards, cracking down on drunk driving, cracking down on seat belt violations, the economic downturn, and improved vehicle design are all cited as causes for decreased fatalities.

Unfortunately, this nationwide trend did not carry over to California and Arizona, with accident deaths increasing over 3% in 2011. While the numbers continue to improve overall, 32,310 traffic deaths is still an alarming number. By buckling up and driving distraction free, we can still bring this number down.

A new study from the Society of Automotive Engineers has concluded that failure of drivers to use turn signals could be responsible for as many as 2 million accidents every year.

A new study from the Society of Automotive Engineers has concluded that failure of drivers to use turn signals could be responsible for as many as 2 million accidents every year. And surprisingly, this is more than twice the number of auto accidents attributed to distracted driving, including texting while driving.

According to the research, drivers incorrectly use turn signals when changing lanes 48% of the time. Drivers also fail to use their turn signal about 25% of the time when actually making a turn. In total, the research estimates that turn signals are used improperly 750 billion times a year.

The author of the report notes that drivers have a duty to use their turn signals in much the same way that drivers have a duty to stop for stop signs and red lights. And while we’ve all seen numerous drivers who believe they don’t have a duty to stop for stop signs and red lights either, we’ve seen many more drivers who simply won’t use a turn signal.

See the full news article here.

Bayer AG, the manufacturer of YAZ and Yasmin birth control pills, has agreed to pay over $110 million to settle about 500 lawsuits filed on behalf of patients who took their drugs and suffered blood clot injuries.

Bayer AG, the manufacturer of YAZ and Yasmin birth control pills, has agreed to pay over $110 million to settle about 500 lawsuits filed on behalf of patients who took their drugs and suffered blood clot injuries. Over 11,000 lawsuits against Bayer have been filed to date.

YAZ and Yasmin have been under investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after studies linked the popular birth control pills to an increased risk of blood clot. Studies have shown that women taking birth control containing drospirenone, such as YAZ and Yasmin, have a much greater risk of life-threatening blood clots than women who use other birth control medications. It has been reported that Bayer originally withheld information regarding this risk from the FDA. The FDA recently voted to update YAZ and Yasmin labeling to warn of the additional risk.

See the news article here.

A new study has made an interesting discovery. More United States drivers are killed in auto accidents on Tax Day than other comparable days.

A new study has made an interesting discovery. More United States drivers are killed in auto accidents on Tax Day than other comparable days. The Canadian study concludes that there is a 6% higher risk of being involved in a fatal auto accident as a driver, passenger, or pedestrian.

The data in the study aligns with the long-held assumption that stressed drivers are more dangerous on the road than non-stressed drivers. And no single day of the year is filled with more simultaneously stressed people than tax day.

A new hiring practice has come to light, and it's got many privacy advocates unnerved.

A new hiring practice has come to light, and it’s got many privacy advocates unnerved. It’s widely known and accepted that many companies looking for new employees may search for a job candidate’s profile on Facebook or other social media. But recently, some companies have been asking for job seekers’ usernames and passwords.

The implications of such a practice is obvious for job seekers. However, what is unknown is whether the practice is legal. Facebook has entered the debate, warning employers to not request username and passwords, as it is an invasion of privacy that could potentially open employers to discrimination lawsuits. Coincidentally for job seekers, it’s against Facebook’s terms of use to divulge your username and password.

See news articles on this practice here and here.

An investigation into why a school bus in Washington state flipped onto its side this week could take months.

An investigation into why a school bus in Washington state flipped onto its side this week could take months. In all, 39 students were injured when the bus veered off the road and over-corrected, causing the bus to roll. None of the injuries were severe, thought one child was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

These kinds of accidents are the scariest. No other vehicles were involved, there was little to no traffic, and the road conditions were dry. Authorities are trying to investigate the cause of the bus accident, but are first trying to determine how to interview the students involved in the accident.

Being involved in a bus or other public transportation accident can be unnerving. Often, these vehicles do not have seat belts, so any serious accident poses a greater risk of injury. Pursuing bus accident legal cases can be confusing. If you or a loved one has been injured in a public transportation accident, contact The Law Offices of Larry H. Parker today at (800) 333-0000 for a free consultation. We can help you begin the healing process by finding you a doctor who won’t charge you out of pocket.
